Woodturnings

by Ken Grunke

Spring has Sprung

Here are 3 mushrooms just off the lathe, they still need finish sanding, varnishing and buffing before going to market on my Etsy store. They are turned from branchwood, with just a thin slice of the outside bark remaining to form the edge of the caps.  The stems are turned in two operations, on different centers to give a slightly bent, crooked shape. Behind them are additional 'shrooms I've turned in the last week.

Box Elder "Gnarlywood" Keepsake Vases

Making progress!
Slowly building up the varnish in thin coats, wet-sanding with 400 grit and polyurethane varnish to fill in small areas of grain tear-out.

Box Elder Keepsake Vase, #2

Well, it turned out as I hoped, with grain almost as pretty as #1. I'm happy with it, so on the drying shelf it goes :D

Coming Up Next

This gnarly chunk of wood is from the same limb where the previous Box Elder Keepsake vase came from, and if all goes well, will result in a similar piece.
